Best bet on horse racing handicaps for beginners and novice horse players

In addition to getting a good tip on a horse from someone who knows it, there are some bets that traditionally offer a better chance of winning and making money betting on horse racing, especially if you are a beginner or have limited experience in horse racing with handicap. Entering any race track, the horse player is presented with a multitude of opportunities to bet on almost any race. There are the traditional flat bets like win, place and show. Then there are the exotic bets like daily double, exact, quinella, trifecta, superfecta, pick three, pick four, pick six, pick nine, and more.

It’s nice to have so many options, but that can be a trap for the beginner. Seeing a big payoff on an exotic bet, like the super-perfect one at the Kentucky Derby that paid out over half a million dollars, can encourage a bettor to bet on the exotic bets and abandon the less exciting flat bets.

But there are several inherent pitfalls in the exotic, especially if you have limited knowledge of betting and how to make money from your bets. If you’re just playing for fun, then by all means go for the fences, as they say, and go exotic, but just keep in mind that getting the really big payoff is almost as difficult as winning the lottery. But if you want the nice feeling of leaving the race track with more money than you put in, flat bets are a much better deal.

One of the reasons flat bets are good is that you can know what you are getting and what the bet pays out. That means you can make a fair judgment on the true value of the bet. Even a person with rudimentary horse skills will sometimes look at the odds and think, “That horse would be bet more than that, that’s good business!”

When that happens, it is a golden opportunity to make a profit. Put enough of those situations together and you will be a winning rider, no matter how much experience you have had. Another reason exotics aren’t as good as flat bets is that take-out, or “vig,” as it is sometimes called, is higher on exotics in most situations. That means the track takes more money out of the pool before the winners of the bet are paid, so you are paying more for the privilege of placing the bet. Over time, a higher vig, even just a few percentage points higher, can really add up and eat away at your earnings.

If you find flat bets too boring and you really feel like you should play exotics, I advise you to find a horse that appears to be coming off with good odds, compared to its form, and ride it in one of the exotic pools. if it really is an overlay, the exotics can pay well and you won’t lose because you couldn’t figure out which horses to use to complete the bet. So the winning bet is by far the best bet for a beginner or novice, followed by the wheel bet on the exotics.
