Selecting John Deere Part Numbers for John Deere Equipment – It’s Not as Simple as It Seems

Identifying John Deere parts is sometimes not as simple as providing a machine serial number or engine serial number, and then looking up parts in the parts catalog. Experience has shown that this method is not as straightforward as many, myself included, would prefer it to be.

To begin with, let’s start with John Deere water pumps. Using a John Deere 4045 engine as an example, using the parts manuals would reveal many different water pumps that can fit a 4045 engine. Considering there are 4045, 4045D and 4045T engines, the number of water pumps available will increase. . In some cases, the application (eg agriculture or construction) will help zone the correct pump. However, in almost most cases, the pump combinations would require additional information. In this case, the number that is stamped on the old water pump is needed. This is known as a “Casting Number”. On the pump casing, a number will be engraved.

This usually begins with the letter “R” or “T”. Therefore, both T29701 and R55971 are John Deere water pump casting numbers.

John Deere 4045 engines built in Dubuque, without a turbocharger, will have water pump part number RE21177. The housing part number is AR80109. John Deere will list both of these numbers with a casting number of R59049.

The John Deere Dubuque turbocharged engine will have a water pump part number of AR77142. The housing part number is AR80116. This engine water pump has two different casting numbers, R90784 and R104648. Provide these numbers to aftermarket dealers when ordering a new water pump or water pump overhaul kit.

This casting number phenomenon is not just limited to water pumps. When ordering an engine overhaul kit, the piston number and connecting rod casting numbers are sometimes required to identify which components are compatible.

Marine engines, compared to construction engines, will have slightly different components. A cylinder block for the marine engine for the 4045 engine may be slightly different from the cylinder block for a 4045 tractor engine. They are both made for different applications and may be different. Marine engines are specially designed for continuous operations.

To answer the question of whether a marine engine block can be exchanged for a generator engine block, for example, two things must be done.

One, compare the launch numbers on both blocks. This is embossed on the side of the cylinder block. If the two numbers are identical, then interchangeability is possible.

Two, compare the SAE casings of the two engines. There is no use changing engine blocks only to find out late that the SAE casings are different and therefore the transmission cannot be bolted on.

When writing on the subject of John Deere casting numbers, other relatively simple information is invaluable in identifying the correct parts and part numbers. As simple as it sounds; The exact model of the machine is needed. A 310 backhoe is not the same as a 310G backhoe. The serial number of the machine is also required. A serial number will include the engine model and machine type. John Deere’s online system offers a free service whereby the machine serial number is entered and JD data is provided.
