Types of paint variations

Paint is a liquid that dries to a solid opaque form after it has been applied to a surface. It is usually made up of pigment, binder, solvent and additives that contribute to its performance and application on a given surface. The paint can be used in various applications. One could be for protection as in the painting of buildings and structures to protect them from the effects of water and sun. The paint can also serve as a decoration when applying decorative paint, and also to draw pictures and create signs for information. There are many variations of paint that are used in different paint applications.

Before the actual painting, a primer is the preparatory coating that is applied to the surface of the material being painted. The application of a primer ensures that the paint adheres better to the surface, is more resistant. It also provides additional protection for painted material.

An emulsion paint is the water-based paint that is basically used on interior or exterior surfaces.

There are also pigment-free paints that are used for protective coatings, such as varnishes and shellac. A varnish is a transparent film used primarily as a wood finish. Shellac, which is actually a resin secreted by a female shellac to form a cocoon, has many functions: primer, sanding sealer, tannin blocker, odor blocker, stain, and high-gloss varnish, among many others.

Wood stain provides a thin film on the surface. It has a formulation that allows its pigment to penetrate and absorb into the surface instead of staying with the film. Its composition is pigment, solvent and a small amount of binder.

Lacquer is essentially a clear or colored varnish that dries quickly to a hard, durable finish. It can range from ultra matte to high gloss.

The paint that produces a hard, shiny finish when it dries is enamel paint that contains glass powder or small pieces of metal flake instead of the pigments found in most standard oil-based paints.

A glaze refers to the paint additive or composition that decreases the drying time of the applied paint to increase its luminosity, especially in Faux and Art paint.

A roof coating, as the name implies, is used on roofs to protect them from UV rays due to the elastic properties of the material that allows it to stretch and return to its original shape without being damaged.

A finger paint is a type of paint that is applied to a surface with the use of the fingers and usually comes in bottles. Adults can use it to teach children art.

Anti-graffiti coatings are applied to surfaces to whiten graffiti vandal marks and can be sacrificial or non-adherent. The first type, sacrificial, allows the removal of graffiti. The material is applied to the shattered surface and hosed off with water. Both graffiti and paint will be removed, so it will be a sacrifice. Surfaces applied with non-adherent coatings do not allow the application of graffiti on them.

Anti-scald paint is a type of coating that looks similar to regular paint but is actually very slippery. A wall painted with this type of paint is extremely difficult to climb and sticks to the climber.
