5 tips for music teachers to get more students online

Are you a freelance music teacher wondering how you can get more students online to learn piano, violin, cello, etc. lessons? Do you know some of the ways to make yourself more visible on the Internet? Below are 5 easy tips on how you can reach out and attract more potential students to join you!

1. Social Media – There are several social media platforms out there and you should definitely sign up for most if not all of them. The most common are Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Pinterest. Another useful professional social network will be LinkedIn. Make sure your profile is up to date. Be proactive and increase your visibility by connecting with professional groups like the Piano Teachers Group or the Violin Teachers Network.

2. Free profile listing on online portals – Some music agencies offer portals that allow you to market yourself to students interested in music lessons by displaying information about yourself to the public. Information such as bio, credentials, lesson fees, available times are made available and displayed to the public. These portals not only increase transparency between music students and teachers, but also minimize the time required for clarification. Plus, it’s advertising free!

3. Good photos and videos: Pictures speak a thousand words. Many of the social networks and portals allow you to upload photos and videos. Take a good photo of yourself playing the instrument you are teaching. In some of the profile listings on online portals, they allow you to upload videos. Professionally clip your drum or clarinet lessons and upload them to video-sharing websites like Vimeo and YouTube. You can then insert these links when you create your profile.

4. Free Classified Ads – Another free marketing you should definitely consider is posting your ad on free classified sites. Some good examples will be Locanto and Gumtree. Make your ad compelling by using keywords that tell students what musical instruments you are teaching, your experience, and your preferred teaching locations.

5. Own website: If the budget allows it, it will be a good idea to create your own website. You might consider having a blog as one of your web pages and regularly update it with helpful articles to showcase some of the lessons you’ve taught and the accomplishments you’ve helped your students with. Having a good website could cost you a few hundred dollars.
