Female Tennis Players – Female Tennis Stars

Women’s tennis is an unusual combination of power and grace in striking.

Some legendary names associated with this sport include:

Maria Bueno: Won 3 Wimbledon and 4 US Open titles, and 12 Grand Slam doubles titles. Maria was the first player to win 4 Grand Slam double titles in one year.

Billie Jean King: Won the Outstanding Female Athlete of the World in 1967, the Sportsperson of the Year in 1972, the Female Athlete of the Year in 1973, and the National Service Bowl.

Tracy Austin – Won 21 junior titles and became the youngest US Open champion at age 16. She was also the longest-running female tennis player in the world ranking of number 1, a position she held for 6 years. Austin was the youngest player to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Dorothea Douglass Chambers: Won 7 singles titles in 1903.

Charlotte Cooper: Won 5 Wimbledon Championships. Cooper was the first to win Olympic gold and the oldest player to win a Wimbledon mosaic at age 37.

Lottie Dod – Won 5 Wimbledon titles and is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Althea Gibson: She was the first African American to win a Wimbledon title.

Chris Evert: She was the world’s youngest No. 1 female player at the tender age of 14. She won 18 Grand Slam singles including 7 French Open titles.

Martina Navratilova: She is considered the best tennis player of the 20th century. She won 18 singles Grand Slams, 31 doubles and 10 mixed doubles Grand Slams.

Steffie Graf – Won 22 Grand Slam singles, an Olympic gold in 1988, and was ranked the No. 1 player in the world for 377 weeks.

Monica Seles: Won Olympic bronze in 2000.

Jennifer Capriati: Won Olympic gold in 1992.

Martina Hingis: Won Grand Slam titles in 5 singles, 9 doubles, and 1 mixed double.

This would be incomplete without the names of Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Lindsay Davenport, Kim Clijsters, and Justine Henin.
