How to Stop Looking at Porn: Hypnotherapy for Porn Addiction

If you suspect that you are spending too much time viewing pornography or that your love of pornography has gotten out of control, you may have what is colloquially known as “porn addiction.” Fortunately, help is available. As with any other type of addiction, from smoking to alcohol abuse, there are many trained professionals to support you. Various organizations (especially Christian) and sexual problem treatments have sprung up dedicated to helping those addicted to pornography. Also, like most addictions, excessive consumption of erotic media responds very well to treatment through hypnotherapy and NLP.

How much is too much?

Of course, porn addiction is a controversial term. Although the term has been used widely by anti-pornography activists and groups, the condition is not listed anywhere in the DSM-IV, the diagnostic guide to mental illness used by the psychology profession. In the end, the question of whether or not you are “addicted” to viewing and masturbating to pornographic works is up to you and your partner(s). Does your use of pornography significantly interfere with your life and relationships? Do you seem to consider viewing pornography a higher life priority than family or work (keep in mind that actions speak louder than words hear)? Is viewing pornography a betrayal of your moral values? Do you yourself sometimes wish you could stop wanting to look at pornography? Do you feel unable to stop, despite your own wishes or those of your romantic partner? If your answer to any of these questions is “yes”, then perhaps you should consider seeking help for porn addiction.

how addictions work

Addictions generally tend to work the same way. First, a certain activity, like presumably masturbating to porn, will give you pleasure. When the activity ceases, the pleasure will disappear. With many “addictive” activities, you will feel a strong compulsion to repeat the pleasure. However, with each repetition of the pleasurable activity, the impermanence of the pleasure will cause you more and more pain. Unfortunately, that same impermanence will cause you, the addict, to become increasingly obsessed with pleasurable activity. You will not be able to bear to lose something as valuable as pleasure. Over time, activity and your obsession will take over your life. Your pleasure will be long gone, but you won’t care anymore. If you are a porn addict, this is your relationship with porn. Such is the mechanism of addiction.

NLP and hypnotherapy offer effective help for porn addiction

NLP, short for “neuro-linguistic programming,” is a great way to cure porn addiction. What NLP does is teach the addict to recognize and isolate the recurring and ever repetitive thought processes that lead to craving.

Throughout the period that one is addicted, these thought processes remain the same. However, addicts rarely acknowledge these thoughts on their own. Often, they simply follow their compulsions (eg, “I must watch porn”), regardless of the fleeting feelings that lead them (eg, “I’m bored; I’m a bad person; porn will stimulate me and distract me.” mind of the fact that I’m a bad person”). Now, if the addict recognizes these recurring thoughts, as he will sometimes during the later stages of his condition, he feels powerless to prevent them from leading him to his inevitable conclusion.

On the contrary, after just a few combined NLP and hypnosis sessions, addicts can usually learn to not only recognize harmful thoughts, but also to replace them with better ones. This is why NLP and hypnotherapy can stop addictive behavior and why they are such powerful sources of help for porn addiction.
