Review of the BBC documentary on hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is the modern way of tackling the obstacles that lie within the “programming of the mind.” The treatment is fast and effective and is periodically reviewed in the media. The treatments offered are limited only by your desire to change.

It was great to see a positive look at some of the benefits of using natural treatments for physical problems – hypnotherapy seems like a hit! The BBC shows Hypnotherapy and some of its best hits.

Dr. Kathy Sykes researched hypnotherapy for the BBC and her results were shown in a documentary last night. The goal: to find out how effective it is as a treatment for a number of common problems and to discover if there is any basis to believe that it can be very successful.

At first, Kathy BBC wondered what the “unconscious” is or does it exist. He laughed at the notion of a hypnosis CD that helps women increase their breast size and then said he couldn’t find any scientific research – there is research that found on 60 women, all experienced an increase in breast size. bust and only one did not increase. a cup size, quite significant, I would say. Participants in this trial were taught self-hypnosis and instructed to use it twice daily every day to stimulate stimulation and growth of breast tissue. Several women were found to have negative associations with larger breasts and unconsciously limited growth.

I initially laughed when BBC TV’s Dr. Kathy Sykes brought up her question about the existence of the unconscious. It’s silly to me today that someone doesn’t know what the difference is between their unconscious and conscious mind, but that’s because I’m so used to thinking in those terms.

For those who want to know, this is the difference between the conscious and the unconscious.

*

The conscious mind is the part of the mind that is currently aware of your experiences. At this moment, you are aware of sitting at a computer, reading a journal entry on a website. Your mind will make evaluations based on your knowledge and experience of what you are reading. Judging whether it is founded or unfounded, makes sense to you, or just doesn’t meet your current beliefs. To do this, the judgments part, you must keep accessing your ‘unconscious mind’.

*

Your unconscious mind is where all the information is, everything you have learned or experienced is recorded here. There are experience programs already written before your birth; We call that instinct. Then a lot is added as you grow, learn, and mature in life. Your unconscious is also responsible for all other ongoing tasks such as breathing, heart rate, healing, energy, etc. Here the ‘how we react to situations, people, emotions, triggers, stimuli, experiences, etc. is recorded. That’s why and how we can help people change the other problems that she seemed surprised to see on the list, such as; lying, anger, motivation, athletic performance, and just about any other behavior you can mention; Because it is programmed based on perception, emotion, and need at the time we first learned it, later experiences will further aggravate the strength of the belief or reaction and that is why direct access to the Unconscious is the way to make changes.

What is Trance?

There was some debate about Kathy’s ‘trance state’ in the BBC hypnotherapy study and whether or not it exists or is just a ‘suggestion’. Much of the research showed that there was a difference in brain activity if the person was in an altered state (we call it a trance). There seemed to be significant evidence to show that it does make a difference in the perception of individuals and their ability to “imagine” really well.

Trance is a natural phenomenon. We also like to daydream and, as BBC’s Dr Kathy Sykes pointed out when given the opportunity to experience it, she was trying to control suggestions and have a ‘bloodthirsty mind’. The Dr. who was working with her at the time was not at all concerned that her experience had anything to do with her abilities and everything to do with her stamina. I absolutely agree with this and it should help everyone reading this to know that they are always in control of their trance experience, whether they choose to enter hypnosis or not. I would describe Dr. Kathy Sykes as a ‘polarity response’ in that session, which means that she would do the opposite of what was asked to prove a point; in this case, it simply demonstrated what most hypnotherapists already know, therapists CAN’T MAKE YOU DO ANYTHING YOU HAVE NOT DECIDED TO DO!

Amir Raz, a neuroscientist, spoke about highly focused attention, which is easier when you are aware of the difference between conscious and unconscious activity. When you get someone to access their imagination, use it really well, use all the senses and focus on the result, this is highly focused attention and can be witnessed with both hypnotherapy techniques and NLP techniques when used by a practitioner. expert.

Professor Irving Kirsch, a psychologist from Modena, Italy, spoke to the BBC about highly suggestible people. I have an opinion on this. I have found that people become easier to suggest as they learn to trust a therapist / coach. They are more likely to be “open” to suggestions once they know that their intentions are good and that they have overcome any of their own personal barriers.

Richard, a police officer, also smoked heavily. Richard, like many, wanted to quit smoking and was chosen by the BBC to highlight Hypnotherapy and Smoking Cessation; BBC producers spoke to him after 3 months after a hypnosis session. Dr. Kathy Sykes wasn’t sure of success; hmmm, as a former smoker, I know that being able to STOP is the hardest thing you intend to do. This he did and reported that he did not want a cigarette. He smoked 3 weeks later when he was socializing; I have found that this type of trigger generally suggests that the individual has a strong association with adjusting (which is important) and smoking, and unconsciously wishes not to smoke. I was a bit surprised that Dr. Kathy didn’t consider this as successful as I and clearly Richard. He was effectively ‘in control’ of the addiction and that is, after all, what we all want, isn’t it?

The same result occurred with Nicola who had reported being addicted to chocolate, again the BBC filmed the original hypnosis and then the outcome. Being addicted meant that she was not in control of eating chocolate and would overeat or binge and eat chocolate too often. After his treatment for chocolate addiction (technical summary using some NLP combined with some hypnosis), he had no desire to eat chocolate for some time. Now she was sitting in front of a chocolate cake saying she had too much chocolate to eat. So she could now CHOOSE! These types of techniques will not stop you from eating or doing anything you were once addicted to, it will only give you control of the behavior. Of course, 4 months later, she was still not thinking about “corned beef” (which was the undesirable food that the therapist associated with chocolate to end the craving).

These are examples of what most hypnotherapists look for; for people to have more control, not necessarily have a permanent dislike.

Two of the most surprising conditions helped by hypnotherapy presented by the BBC included hypnotherapy for IBS. Where all other conventional treatments have failed, NHS professionals offer hypnotherapy. It’s something our clients frequently ask for help with and it’s very successful. We use the same types of treatment that appear in the program, for example, visualization and tactile hypnotherapy (or hypnohealing). In most professional practices, the treatment for irritable bowel syndrome is much more advanced than has been shown. Over the years, we have worked with young people who are afraid to leave home for fear of “losing control” of their bowel function and with older people who have simply given up, assuming their condition is incurable. We like to rephrase that statement so that if they tell you something is ‘incurable’, just go ‘inside’ to find that cure!

The other treatment that surprised Dr. Kathy so much that she had to avoid fainting is the use of hypnosis to combat or eliminate PAIN. Hypnotherapy is a very effective pain management treatment; well why handle it if you can get rid of it completely? In fact, there is tons of research and some hospitals use hypnotherapy for pain and before and after operations, regularly in favor of many chemicals and medications. We are a bit behind in the UK on this issue. Once again, thanks to the BBC for recognizing hypnotherapy for dental treatment: the lady in question had two teeth removed, two pegs drilled into the bone, and had two new teeth added! WITHOUT ANY ANESTHETIC !!! She controlled the pain using her mind with the help of her well-trained dentist who used hypnosis to help her patients. I had previously had sessions before to create a successful anchor for relaxation and feeling in control. Her blood pressure didn’t change at all, in fact, it skyrocketed when she opened her eyes and found the television crew surrounding her. However, Dr. Kathy was a different matter! Could have done it with a little self-hypnosis I think!

It is good to see the BBC reviewing this topic and the overall result seems to be that it is worth seeking out therapists who actually use a number of techniques. Dr. Kathy Sykes focused on studies that showed that therapists using hypnotherapy in conjunction with other psychological treatments were more successful.

There are many different levels of experience and qualification within the hypnotherapy profession and those who work full time will obviously be more skilled than those who do not. It is worth noting that any would-be hypnotherapist using a “script” must have a wide margin. The skill is not just inducing hypnosis, but knowing how to help someone when they are in a trance. When other skills are added, such as NLP, EFT, and Life Coaching, it will ensure that the therapist is more complete and more likely to be able to offer more success to the client in the sessions.
