The tradition of Christmas decoration
People all over the world celebrate Christmas or some kind of holiday in late December or early January. Fir trees decorated with roses, gold candies, colored paper, and apples were popular in 16th-century Germany. Later, the Protestant Martin Luther decorated a fir tree with lights. He created the effect of shining stars by placing candles on the branches of a small fir tree that he cut down and placed in his house. The traditions are centuries old, but today we continue this traditional way of celebrating Christmas.

Country people a couple of generations ago remember that Christmas lights were little white candles on the trees inside and outside the house as well. Spectacular displays are particularly seen in the United States more than other countries, although some countries also come close with their spectacular displays. The history of Christmas lights began when Edward Johnson, an employee of Thomas Edison, created a set of 80 red, white, and blue lights. At Christmas he decorated a tree in the town square with these light bulbs and wowed the public.
