Youth Baseball: Five Tips to Help You Be a Part of the School Team

If you play minor league baseball, you probably know that everyone is accepted in the minor leagues. If you are a serious baseball player, chances are you want to be on the school baseball team at some point. Know that very few Little League players will ever make a school team.

If this is important to you, here are five tips from high school coaches to help you be successful:

1. Keep your grades up. All school teams have minimum qualification requirements. You could be the best baseball player in the state, but if you don’t have good grades, you won’t make the team. Pay attention to your studies first, then to baseball.

two. Know the game. Study your school’s district rule book. Be a baseball student and learn the history of the game. Get facts about players and teams in the major leagues.

3. Perseverance is more important than talent. Hang out in the changing rooms. Get to know the players and coaches at your school. Wait for their games and encourage them. Volunteer to help out at the games. Make yourself known. And you should do all of this WHILE practicing and improving your own skills.

Four. You must practice every day of the year. Hitting practice, throwing practice, exercise. Do something every day, even in the dead of winter. Even at Christmas! And keep it posted in a journal along with notes on your personal observations so you can see the progress you are making.

5. Always have a positive attitude. Encourage your teammates. Listen to the coaches. Don’t argue. Appear enthusiastic all the time. Hustle. A player who has a great attitude will make a team over a better player with a bad attitude.

Getting to the school baseball team is tough, no matter how long you’ve played baseball. Following these five tips will dramatically increase your chances of being on the team.
