How to potty train a puppy: some pros and cons

Potty training your pup requires a high degree of patience from the owner. It is very important that you do not lose your cool and get frustrated. There are several ways to train your puppy to go potty outside. Here are some tips, a simple list of do’s and don’ts, that will help potty train your pup within a few weeks.

Potty Training Your Puppy: Back

– Maintain a fixed schedule of meal times. Strictly follow it so that your puppy receives food only at meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner.
– Praise your puppy every time he relieves himself outside. This can include pats on the head or some praise in soft, warm tones.
– Scold or penalize (but only slightly during the initial period) the puppy if you catch him urinating or doing his business inside the house. This will slowly teach him that going to the bathroom makes you angry.
– Give your puppy dry or bolus food during the potty training period. This will result in solid stools and a regular bowel movement.
– Keep your puppy in a large crate while inside. These crates can easily be purchased at a pet store. The idea behind this is that the pup will not soil its own sleeping area and will therefore slowly learn to control its urination and needs.
– Take your puppy for a walk after every meal and once before going to sleep and once just after waking up in the morning. Go for a walk at set times of the day.
– While out for a walk, be patient with your pup and wait at least twenty minutes without activity before you decide to go home.
– You have to understand that puppies have less control over their bladders and bowels, and therefore it will take some time before the puppy learns to control its urine and needs until it is taken for a walk.
– If your puppy is over four months old and hasn’t learned a bit of potty training, you should consult your vet on the subject.

Potty Training Your Puppy: What Not to Do

– If you find dog poop inside the house, clean it up quietly, but don’t scold the dog because it’s been a while since he did that particular toilet, as you won’t be able to make the connection between the reprimand and the act.
– Do not try to ‘paper train’ your puppy, especially in the initial period, as you will then have to unlearn paper training again and teach him to go outside.
– Never use violence with your puppy for doing something bad.
– Do not keep the puppy in rooms with carpets, rugs or rugs.
– Do not follow irregular eating and walking schedules.
– Do not make your puppy drink water at least two or three hours before bed.

At the end of the day, you have to be patient and wait until your pup slowly learns to control his potty and hold it until you take him out for a walk. Results won’t magically appear overnight.
